اعداد اصلي و ترتيبي

Ordinal and cardinal numbers

اعداد اصلي (cardinal) همان اعداد معمولي هستند. اعداد ترتيبي (Ordinal) اعدادي مانند اول، دوم، سوم، و .... هستند. به غير از چند استثنا براي ساختن عدد ترتيبي به آخر عددthاضافه مي‌‌‌‌كنيم. (در عدد يك از st – در عدد دو ازndو در عدد 3 ازrdاستفاده مي‌شود.)

0th = zeroth or nought
1st = first
2nd = second
3rd = third
4th = fourth
5th = fifth
8th = eighth
9th = ninth
10th = tenth
12th = twelfth
20th = twentieth
21st = twenty-first
25th = twenty-fifth
32nd = thirty-second
30th = thirtieth
40th = fortieth
50th = fiftieth
58th = fifty-eighth
60th = sixtieth
64th = sixty-fourth
70th = seventieth
79th = seventy-ninth
80th = eightieth
83rd = eighty-third

پس به طور كلي عدد هر چه باشد آن را مي خوانيم و به آخرين عدد st, nd, rd يا th اضافه مي‌كنيم.

طرز گفتن روز و ماه و سال

مرسوم‌ترين روش براي گفتن سال، گفتن اعداد به صورت دو تايي است. يعني به سال1920گفته مي‌شود:nineteen-twenty

999 = Nine ninety-nine
1000 = One thousand
1225 = Twelve twenty-five
1900 = Nineteen hundred
1901 = Nineteen oh-one
1919 = Nineteen nineteen

2000 = Two thousand or Twenty hundred
2001 = Two thousand (and) one or Twenty oh-one
2009 = Two thousand (and) nine or Twenty oh-nine
2010 = Twenty-ten or Two thousand (and) ten
2025 = Twenty twenty-five
2099 = Twenty ninety-nine
2100 = Twenty-one hundred
2101 = Twenty-one-oh-one or Two thousand, one hundred (and) one

بيان روز و ماه

هرچند از روشهاي مختلفي براي بيان تقويم استفاده مي‌شود اما مي‌توان معمولترين آنها را به اين ترتيب ذكر كرد:

1. درانگليسي بريتانيايي معمولا روز قبل از ماه مي‌آيد و روز به صورت ترتيبي بيان مي‌شود:

The 1st of October 1984
The first of January 2005
The 25th of January 2005

-گاهيtheوofحذف مي‌شوند:

25th January 2005

-ممكن است ترتيبي بودن (th) هم حذف شود:

25 January 2005

2. در انگليسي امريكايي معمولا روز بعد از ماه مي‌آيد:

September 4, 1990 (read "September four(th), nineteen ninety")
June 10, 1969 (June ten(th), nineteen sixty-nine")

اعداد كسري و اعشاري

ا. اعداد كسري

براي بيان اعداد كسري معمولا صورت كسر را معمولي و مخرج كسر را ترتيبي مي‌خوانيم :

1/16 = one-sixteenth 1/10 or 0.1 = one-tenth 1/8 = one-eighth
2/10 or 0.2 = two-tenths ¼ = one-quarter (British) or one-fourth (American)
3/10 or 0.3 = three-tenths 1/3 = one-third 3/8 = three-eighths

4/10 or 0.4 = four-tenths ½ = one half 6/10 or 0.6 = six-tenths

5/8 = five-eighths 2/3 = two-thirds 7/10 or 0.7 = seven-tenths
¾ = three-quarters (British) or three-fourths (American) 15/16 = fifteen-sixteenths

گاهي اوقات ممكن است از كلمه‌ي over به معناي روي هم استفاده شود. مثلا براي 8/2 گفته شود: eight over two . (بيشتر در انگليسي بريتانيا)

2. اعداد اعشاری

در اعداد اعشاري معمولا به جاي مميز از كلمه‌ي point استفاده مي‌شود و به جاي عدد صفر از zero ياnaught استتفاده مي‌شود و اعداد بعد از مميز، يكي يكي خوانده مي‌شوند. )ممكن است در گفتارهاي غير رسمي به جاي صفر o گفته شود)

0.002 = "point zero zero two", "point o o two", "naught point zero zero two", etc.
0.5 = naught point five or point five (US: zero point five)
3.375 = three point three seven five
99.3 = ninety- nine point three
13.75 = thirteen point seven five
3.1416 = three point one four one six

1. Use a decimal point instead of commas for prices and percentages

3. Use hyphens when you write fractions and also to show sports scores

5. Use a slash to show how a quantity is divided

What Numbers Represent
Numbers are often used on their own to show:
Price : It cost eight seventy-five (=8 dollars and 75 cents: $8.75).
Time We left at two twenty-five (=25 minutes after 2 o’clock).
Age : She’s forty-six (=46 years old). I He’s in his sixties (=between 60 and 69 years old).
Size : This shirt is a twelve (=size 12).
Temperature : The temperature fell to minus fourteen (=–14°). I The temperature was in the mid-thirties (=about 34–36°).
The score in a game : The Braves were ahead four to two (=4–2).
Something marked with the stated number : She played two nines and an eight (=playing
cards marked with these numbers). | I only have a twenty (=a piece of paper money worth $20).
A set or group of the stated number : The teacher divided us into fours (=groups of 4).

Determiners : Five people were hurt in the accident. | the three largest companies in the U.S. |

Pronouns : We invited a lot of people but only twelve came/only twelve of them came. |
